5 College Application Essay Topics That Always Work
5 College Application Essay Topics That Always Work In countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, essays have become a major part of a formal education in the form of free response questions. Secondary students in these countries are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and essays are often used by universities in these countries in selecting applicants . In both secondary and tertiary education, essays are used to judge the mastery and comprehension of the material. But if not, be thankful that youâve had a pretty good life, and share another story about it. It may sound like a chore, and it will certainly take a substantial amount of work. But it's also a unique opportunity that can make a difference at decision time. Admissions committees put the most weight on your high school grades and your test scores . However, selective colleges receive applications from many worthy students with similar scores and gradesâ"too many to admit. You will also have to learn to bulk up the content of each paragraph. I dislike giving rules or formulas to students when it comes to college writing because nearly every rule or formula has both weaknesses and exceptions. But a general guideline for the paragraphs in your college essays is that they should be about 1/3 to 1/2 of a page. Any longer, and chances are good that you have more than one main idea. In which case, you need to find the other secondary main ideas and give them their own paragraphs. So they use your essay, along with your letters of recommendation and extracurricular activities , to find out what sets you apart from the other talented candidates. The essay is supposed to be reflective of the STUDENT, not the parent, and admissions reps are hoping to get a better picture of the applicantâs individuality and unique attributes. It is very easy for a rep to recognize an essay that has been coached someone other than the student. Unfortunately, too many cooks spoil the pot, so to speakâ¦and kids easily get confused when parents, English teachers, their counselor, and their friends all have different advice. The higher a person's affinity index, the more resources the school is likely to spend trying to recruit that student. Great college essays are the kinds that when your best friend reads them, he or she says, âThis is totally you.â You only get limited space on the application to share what you want to share about yourself. So donât waste it trying to wedge in a hardship just because you think thatâs a good strategy. Pick a topic that actually means something to you, something that youâd be excited to share, that hasnât been described in detail elsewhere on the application, and that would pass the best friend litmus test. If the story that fits the criteria is a hardship, go ahead and share it. At Story To College we teach how to find their most honest and authentic stories and shape them into powerful essays that admissions officers will remember. We provide college application essay courses and admissions courses to help all our students achieve their best results. We are excited to host our first application essay courses in Atlanta this summer, starting May 29th. When you submit your essay, remember to include your name, contact information, and ID number if your college provided one, especially if you send it to a general admission email account. Nothing is worse than trying to match an application essay with no name (or, worse, an email address such as ) to a file. Make sure to keep copies of what you sent to which schools and whenâ"and follow up on them! Be certain the college or university you're applying to received your essay. You donât want all that hard work to go to waste. The personal statement might just be the hardest part of your college application. Mostly this is because it has the least guidance and is the most open-ended. One way to understand what colleges are looking for when they ask you to write an essay is to check out the essays of students who already got inâ"college essays that actually worked. Students should familiarize themselves with the campuses to which they are applying , understand the prompt, and answer from the heart. Now parents â" you all know the difference between fixing typographical errors and making massive substantive changes to your childâs essay, right? Remember â" the admissions officers read thousands of essays every admissions season, and they can spot an overly polished essay a mile away. So â" yes â" itâs fine to take a quick read to look for spelling errors, but itâs not fine to write your childâs essay for him or her. After all, they must be among the most successful of this weird literary genre. For students getting ready to apply for college, this may come as a surprise. Students already have their social media profiles subject to review in the admissions process, but other online activity represents a new concern. It appears to at least be one factor considered by a number of universities looking to build more complete profiles of applicants. Students are asked to explain, comment on, or assess a topic of study in the form of an essay. In some courses, university students must complete one or more essays over several weeks or months. In addition, in fields such as the humanities and social sciences, mid-term and end of term examinations often require students to write a short essay in two or three hours.
Application Essay Writing Tips And Prompts
Application Essay Writing Tips And Prompts While an application may have eight, 10 or 30 lines for involvement, busy admission officers who speed read this section may only get to third on the list. Make them want to keep learning about you by telling them clearly and thoroughly whatâs most important to you. Richardson says that the appeal of an essay on an atypical topic such as origami showed that the writer was willing to take risks. In some cases though, the school may emphasize the supplemental essay as a top priority. The essay is the place to make a great first impression on the reader. Theyâll be looking at that before the test scores. You donât want to address your weaknesses, unless itâs a challenge youâve overcome that reveals something powerful about your character. The diversity of Washingtonâs schools and its communities is profoundly interesting â" but use it as a backdrop to write about you. Letâs say, for argumentâs sake, you want to master leadership in college. What aspect of leadership are you looking to develop? Above all, look for words or phrases that can be cut out of your essay to leave just the very best of what you have to say. When youâre nearing the end of your essay, itâs time to put the finishing touches on it with a separate closing paragraph. The conclusion is where you bring together all of the elements you previously mentioned in the other sections. No, you donât have to mention each one explicitly, but your conclusion should cover most of what you addressed in your essay, and make a good clean end to your narrative path. This part of an essay is the first presentation of your ideas. There are a number of elements you want to include in your introduction to encourage the reader to continue reading. First of all, youâll need a âhookâ to open your essay. In addition to the construction of your essay, you also can improve it by looking at your word choices and transitions, or using the best words to move from one idea to the next in making your essay more readable. Varying your word choices keeps your copy fresh and holds the readerâs attention. Make sure to use the short essay questions to talk about things we do not yet know about you. Writing about the same or a similar topic in one of your supplemental essays as your longer personal statement is a missed opportunity to tell us something new about you. The supplement is a short response but can still give us valuable insights into who you are, what you care about, and what you strive to be. This hook should entice the reader by hinting at the essayâs theme in a way that makes the reader want to read more. The hook can be funny, witty, or a simple hypothesis. Whatever style you choose, be sure it coincides with the overall theme of your essay. We talked about prioritizing extra-curricular activities, such as putting the things you care about most and have the most involvement with, first. Thatâs the case at St. Johnâs College, which has campuses in Maryland and New Mexico, says Benjamin Baum, vice president of enrollment for the St. Johnâs system. âItâs more about the voice than anything else,â Inzer says, noting an essay that is too clinical can mute a studentâs personality. Experts say the essay should give the school a sample of his or her personality. Each year, our admissions staff puts a great deal of thought and effort into determining which questions to include in our writing supplement. How to create a college application list that doesn't suck. But be as specific as you can when it comes to your needs. In a dramatic and powerful conclusion is where you want to spell out, in a bold manner, any ideas youâve been hinting at throughout the essay. When you have a good hook in your introduction, you increase the chances that your essay will be effective. For some essay projects, evaluating the audience is important, but for others, itâs best to follow the general writing strategies you see in mainstream writing, periodicals, and professional literature. You want to use any details that will help the reader identify the topic and the scope of the essay. You want to use focused writing with a consistent tone and diction throughout the essay.
College Application Essay
College Application Essay Type up an honest page about someone you admire or the moment you discovered your favorite word or why you donât trust anyone who doesnât like macaroni and cheese. Even very simply put, you can find patterns in your own behavior. Specificity, clarity, and brevity are your keys. George Orwellâs Politics and the English Languageis my personal guide to thinking about writing. The theoretical foundation he lays in this piece â" about the importance of language, including writing, in shaping how we are capable of thinking â" he later built upon in 1984. Teachers, friends and parents can all be helpful proofreaders, but experts note that the student voice should remain intact. This, by the way, is ALSO the reason nobody can do this work for you. Ultimately, youâre the one who really knows your priorities and the things you most need in order to grow. Start by creating a âheadlineâ for each of your target schools. Summarize, in 1 or 2 sentences, what you think the unique fit is between yourself and the school. Treat these sentences as a hypothesis you need to prove. Everything I could ever want to know and more is right at my fingertips. From the change in weight I feel in a moving elevator, to the chemical reactions that cause the plastic stars in my room to glow, science is a field that permeates every single aspect of life. I know my curiosity to understand the world around me nurtures my love for science. It is what motivated me to read about 2D kinematics to win a projectile motion challenge, and understand the chemistry behind qualitative analysis of cations for a lab. Since I donât work for the schools heâs applying to, I told him to research their websites, social media, and literature and pay attention to themes, key messages, and mission statements. At Tech we focus on our motto of Progress and Service and improving the human condition. Action taken, related it back to your own experience. This is what Iâd consider âbare minimumâ for making a solid point as to why you and a school are a good fit. Instead, make a few well chosen points and back them up. What are the two or three things you, personally, MOST need from a college? Categorizing the charity or community service events youâve participated in can also shed light on what you should write about. If youâre dead-set on a specific major, you can trace back where your interest began. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the mindset ofthis-must-be-donethat we forget the primary reason for the presence of a personal essay. My point is that your energy should not be spent on selecting the topic. Once you figure out which question you want to answer, meaning you really have something to say or youâre somewhat excited to respond, start writing. Students applying to us will see questions along those lines, or should be astute enough to find opportunities to provide connections to those concepts. Every school has these, you just have to dig deeper at some places. Then we talked about his supplemental responses. If they see it as a speech, they think they arenât up to the task; if they see it as one more English assignment, theyâre sure they donât want to do the task. Sit down and write about a project that youâre proud of. Talk about organizing an event or participating in a community service project that opened your eyes. How Many Paragraphs In An Essay?
How Many Paragraphs In An Essay? Be aware, however, that different genres have their own special expectations about beginnings and endings. Some academic genres may not even require an introduction or conclusion. Colleges are simply looking for thoughtful, motivated students who will add something to the first-year class. You have a unique background, interests and personality. The best way to tell your story is to write a personal, thoughtful essay about something that has meaning for you. Be honest and genuine, and your unique qualities will shine through. Discover schools, understand your chances, and get expert admissions guidance â" for free. And when youâve woken, give yourself some quiet time to reflect on your intention. Fear can influence our decision-making even while weâre book shopping. If you love traveling and want to encourage your readers to go to a country youâve explored, why not write a book about it? You can even find and interview others whoâve traveled to the same places. Make sure that you are confident in your essay and accept feedback, but donât allow others to change your essay in any way that will cause it to lose its original message. Parents should always help their child in a positive way as long as they are not writing the ideas for the student. Editing is vastly different from original writing so this needs to be clarified first, as it has to be the voice and personal memories of the applicant not the parent. The sooner the family treats this as a team effort it will be much easier for the 12th grader to feel as though they are not alone in this process. How well do you understand the college admissions process? A teacher or college counselor is your best resource. And before you send it off, check, check again, and then triple check to make sure your essay is free of spelling or grammar errors. You don't need to have started your own business or have spent the summer hiking the Appalachian Trail. When writing an essay that requires the use of research and outside sources, this information should be used to support the topic sentence. The term body paragraph refers to any paragraph that follows the introduction and comes before the conclusion. The majority of any essay consists of multiple body paragraphs, and it is in these paragraphs where the main information is presented. An annotated bibliography, for example, typically provides neither. A book review may begin with a summary of the book and conclude with an overall assessment of it. A policy briefing usually includes an introduction but may conclude with a series of recommendations. Check your assignment carefully for any directions about what to include in your introduction or conclusion. We'll send you information to help you throughout the college admissions process. Improve your essay and impress admissions officers with our free Peer Essay Review. Editing for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes is fine, but donât change the voice of the essay. If an essay is too âpolishedâ it may seem inauthentic, creating confusion in the reader. Writing topics that will help your reader improve the quality of their lives are good things to write about. If this is a family member or close friend, a Google search may not yield much, but thatâs okay. If something about this personâs life has made a lasting impact on you, chances are, it will do the same for your readers. And youâre still wondering what topics to write about. 140,000 students rate everything from their professors to their campus social scene. My preference (and admissions officersâ) would be that parents are minimally involved in the essay. Believe me, those admissions officers are experienced and they can definitely spot the difference between a 50 year-old businesspersonâs phraseology and a 17-year-old seniorâs own voice and manner of expression. No matter what type of essay is being written, all body paragraphs need to be fully developed and provide supporting detail. This detail can come in the form of personal examples, statistics, and/or quotes from an expert. The longer an essay is, the more body paragraphs there will be. Because the body paragraphs present the important facts and information from an essay, having well-written body paragraphs is essential in writing a successful essay. Most of the advice in this handout pertains to argumentative or exploratory academic essays.
Worries Grow About Application Essay Help That May Go Too Far
Worries Grow About Application Essay 'Help' That May Go Too Far Here is the problem I know someone who is filling out applications to get aid, they live with their mother and step dad. Because mom never did marry him but they live under his roof. As you make an outline of your essay, make sure you have a clear idea of how much evidence, detail and argumentation will be needed to support your thesis. If you find that you donât have enough ideas to fill out the word count, or that you need more space to make a convincing case, then consider revising your thesis to be more general or more specific. A short essay will need a focused, specific topic and a clear, straightforward line of argument. A longer essay should still be focused, but it might call for a broader approach to the topic or a more complex, ambitious argument. The suggested word count doesnât only tell you how long your essay should be â" it also helps you work out how much information and complexity you can fit into the given space. This should guide the development of your thesis statement, which identifies the main topic of your essay and sets the boundaries of your overall argument. Compare your paper with over 60 billion web pages and 30 million publications. In an academic essay, the main body should always take up the most space. These paragraphs are crucial to an effective essay â"make sure you leave enough space to thoroughly introduce your topic and decisively wrap up your argument. In some cases, you are allowed to exceed the upper word limit by 10% â" so for an assignment of 2500â"3000 words, you could write an absolute maximum of 3300 words. However, the rules depend on your course and institution, so always check with your instructor if youâre unsure. Your marker probably wonât care about 50 or 100 words â" itâs more important that your argument is convincing and adequately developed for an essay of the suggested length. Adding unnecessary words or complicated sentences will make your essay weaker and your argument less clear. College essay prompts usually provide the word limit right in the prompt or in the instructions. Statement of purpose for graduate school To get into graduate school, you need a strong statement of purpose that builds a picture of your experience, achievements, and motivations. How to conclude an essay A strong conclusion ties together your main points, shows why your argument matters, and opens broader questions. If there are a lot of mistakes in your essay, it can not be pretty. You can make your essay beautiful by giving thought to a few things. Consider whether or not bold type face could make your essay easier to read. If there really is no word limit, you can call the school to try to get some guidance. If it's a writing sample of your graded academic work, the length either doesn't matter or there should be some loose page guidelines. If you can truly get your point across well beneath the word limit, it's probably fine. Brevity is not necessarily a bad thing in writing just so long as you are clear, cogent, and communicate what you want to. If you have to copy-paste it into a text box, your essay might get cut off and you'll have to trim down anyways. This is where you make your arguments, give your evidence, and develop your ideas. In this article youâll find some general guidelines for the length of different types of essay. But keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity â" focus on making a strong argument or analysis, not on hitting a specific word count. In most cases, your assignment will include clear guidelines on the number of words or pages you are expected to write. Often this will be a range rather than an exact number (for example, 2500â"3000 words, or 10â"12 pages). For example, you might describe many natural flora, observe fauna, then list feelings you have about nature to lead up to writing that you want to study biology. What if you were to take the negative approach to answer the prompt? Maybe you can tell what your hopes are by writing what you do not hope for. If you look at things a little differently from others you stand out. In answering an essay prompt, you need not always do it the most normal way. If youâre not sure, always check with your instructor. Perhaps you can create a little mystery by not answering the prompt immediately. Maybe you could reveal that in the last sentence of your prompt after telling about all the little things that have some relevance to your area of study.

College Essay Dos & Donts
College Essay Dos & Donâts But I retreated to my desk where a pile of âPlease draw this again and bring it to me tomorrowâ papers lay, desperate for immediate treatment. Later, I even refused to attend the same elementary school and wouldnât even eat meals with him. This essay could work for promptâs 1, 2 and 7 for the Common App. I had been typing an English essay when I heard my cat's loud meows and the flutter of wings. I had turned slightly at the noise and had found the barely breathing bird in front of me. Gingerly, my grandma stood up from the couch in the living room, and as if lured by the smell, sat by the silver bowl and dug her hands into the spiced cabbages. As her bony hands shredded the green lips, a look of determination grew on her face. Over the years, everything--even honoring my grandmother--had become second to school and grades. Before I could resolve my guilt, I had to broaden my perspective of the world as well as my responsibilities to my fellow humans. I became desperately devoted to my education because I saw knowledge as the key to freeing myself from the chains of ignorance. Though her withered hands no longer displayed the swiftness and precision they once did, her face showed the aged rigor of a professional. For the first time in years, the smell of garlic filled the air and the rattling of the silver bowl resonated throughout the house. The world I come from consists of underwear, nuclear bombs, and punk rockers. My world is inherently complex, mysterious, and anti-nihilist. I am David Phan, somebody who spends his weekends debating in a three piece suit, other days immersed within the punk rock culture, and some days writing opinionated blogs about underwear. But the best dimension that language brought to my life is interpersonal connection. When I speak with people in their native language, I find I can connect with them on a more intimate level. I started to believe that academic perfection would be the only way to redeem myself in her eyes--to make up for what I had not done as a granddaughter. When my parents finally revealed to me that my grandmother had been battling liver cancer, I was twelve and I was angry--mostly with myself. They had wanted to protect me--only six years old at the time--from the complex and morose concept of death. Hurt that my parents had deceived me and resentful of my own oblivion, I committed myself to preventing such blindness from resurfacing. While learning about cancer in school I promised myself that I would memorize every fact and absorb every detail in textbooks and online medical journals. And as I began to consider my future, I realized that what I learned in school would allow me to silence that which had silenced my grandmother. However, I was focused not with learning itself, but with good grades and high test scores. They covered the precious mahogany coffin with a brown amalgam of rocks, decomposed organisms, and weeds. It was my turn to take the shovel, but I felt too ashamed to dutifully send her off when I had not properly said goodbye. I refused to let go of my grandmother, to accept a death I had not seen coming, to believe that an illness could not only interrupt, but steal a beloved life. One day, my mom brought home fresh cabbages and red pepper sauce. She brought out the old silver bowl and poured out the cabbages, smothering them with garlic and salt and pepper. Cancer, as powerful and invincible as it may seem, is a mere fraction of a personâs life. Itâs easy to forget when oneâs mind and body are so weak and vulnerable. I want to be there as an oncologist to remind them to take a walk once in a while, to remember that thereâs so much more to life than a disease. While I physically treat their cancer, I want to lend patients emotional support and mental strength to escape the interruption and continue living. Through my work, I can accept the shovel without burying my grandmotherâs memory. However, a simple walk on a hiking trail behind my house made me open my own eyes to the truth.

Writing A College Essay
Writing A College Essay As a senior, most of the accomplishments that will make up the bulk of your application â" academic performance, test scores, and extracurricular involvement â" are said and done. In a sense, the only part of the application over which you have complete control right now is the essay. While the essay is a valuable tool that we use to understand you better, it is rarely if ever a âmake or breakâ component of your application. While we still have a few more days until the official beginning of fall, around here it feels a lot like the season has already begun. For information on other aspects of the application process, you can consult the resources at University Career Services. When you think it is totally finished, you are ready to proofread and format the essay. You cannot afford a careless error in this essay. A well-written, dramatic essay is much more memorable than one that fails to make an emotional impact on the reader. Good anecdotes and personal insights can really attract an audienceâs attention. BUT be careful not to let your drama turn into melodrama. You want your reader to see your choices motivated by passion and drive, not hyperbole and a lack of reality. Donât invent drama where there isnât any, and donât let the drama take over. Donât ramble or use fifteen words to express something you could say in eight. Do address any information about yourself and your application that needs to be explained . Include that information in your essay, and be straightforward about it. Your audience will be more impressed with your having learned from setbacks or having a unique approach than your failure to address those issues. Applications that have several short-answer essays require even more detail. Many applications will require it- or some portion of it; it helps to have the whole essay written and pare it down when needed. Some applications will tell you itâs âoptional.â Always, always, always submit it. Do you have special skills, like leadership, management, research, or communication? Why would the members of the program want to choose you over other applicants? Be honest with yourself and write down your ideas. If you are having trouble, ask a friend or relative to make a list of your strengths or unique qualities that you plan to read on your own . Ask them to give you examples to back up their impressions (For example, if they say you are âcaring,â ask them to describe an incident they remember in which they perceived you as caring). Is there a specific place to write the essay and is there a prompt, the common app doesnât have a location to attach a personal essay. Your essay should help to give better, deeper insight into you as a person. As the post mentions, your essay should supplement the other parts of your application to help us understand you better. That said, you donât have to include anything about yourself that you donât feel comfortable sharing. Why is this the program you want to be admitted to? What is special about the faculty, the courses offered, the placement record, the facilities you might be using? My favorite person, the one who helped me become the man I am today, ripped away from me, leaving a giant hole in my heart and in my life. With her help, I went on hormones five months after coming out and got surgery a year later. I finally found myself, and my mom fought for me, her love was endless. Even though I had friends, writing, and therapy, my strongest support was my mother. I was six when I first refused/rejected girlâs clothing, eight when I only wore boyâs clothing, and fifteen when I realized why. The insufferable stench fills my nostrils and crushes my confidence. I'm momentarily taken aback, unable to understand how I went wrong when I followed the recipe perfectly. Most importantly, my family has taught me an integral life lesson. Laughter fills the show choir room as my teammates and I pass the time by telling bad jokes and breaking out in random bursts of movement. Perhaps if we all learned more about each other's lifestyles, the world would be more empathetic and integrated. Learning how to wake up without my mom every morning became routine. Nothing felt right, a constant numbness to everything, and fog brain was my kryptonite. I paid attention in class, I did the work, but nothing stuck. I felt so stupid, I knew I was capable, I could solve a Rubikâs cube in 25 seconds and write poetry, but I felt broken. I was lost, I couldnât see myself, so stuck on my mother that I fell into an âIt will never get betterâ mindset. Making my teammate smile even though heâs in pain. These are the moments I hold onto, the ones that define who I am, and who I want to be. For me, time isnât just seconds ticking by on a clock, itâs how I measure what matters. â The thought screams through my mind as I carry a sobbing girl on my back across campus in search of an ice pack and ankle wrap. College Essay Writing Tips
College Essay Writing Tips I thought about these things constantlyâ"while brushing my teeth, doing chores, and driving to school. Unable to take this beloved course a second time, I chose my senior classes with more than a touch of melancholy. I was skeptical that even the most appealing humanities class, AP Literature, would be anything but anticlimactic by comparison. Iâd become so accustomed to reading the function-focused writings of Locke, Rousseau, Madison, Thoreau, that I found it difficult to see âliteratureâ as anything more than mere stories. This video shows you how to write an effective college admissions essay. The paradox of the overzealous editing of the college essay by many helicopter parents is that they donât know what a college essay is really about. Unlike the other parts of the application, where high grade point averages and SAT scores reign supreme, the essay is less about being impressive than it is about being authentic. A person they like and remember through the college essay is most likely to be selected. In addition to making sure that all of these things are included, you should also be aware of HOW you write your essay. Admissions committees want essays to be concise â" you want to make your point in about 700 words or less. You should also make sure that your essay is coherent â" that your ideas flow and your arguments make sense. Donât be afraid to show off your writing skills, but donât do anything that takes away from your core message. When my best friend John Smith â20 told me about U.Chicagoâs diverse campus environment , I was excited, but skeptical â" diversity can mean different things to different people. So I went to see for myself, visiting on September 9th, 2017. None of them are wrong, but it doesnât mean theyâre right for you. As the name implies, writing apersonal statementis apersonalexperience, making it just a little bit different for everyone. Not just the process, but the actual statement itself, too. The college essay provides a good opportunity to leave a long-lasting impression on the reader, apart from the interview and an efficient way to let the people in the admission know you closely. The other thing I caution about is the service trip. If you want to write about how you saved the word, you shouldnât do it. I wanted substance that I could actually do something with, and I didnât expect to find it in AP Lit. Some colleges require a supplemental essay in addition to the personal essay. That said, you should absolutely get someone to edit for typos and grammar. Donât just farm it out â" learn from those writing lessons and use the essay to become more confident in your own voice. Bob Davis â12, my tour leader, was extraordinarily patient, walking me through U.Chicagoâs outstanding array of clubs and societies, including the MSAC Committee.

Crafting An Unforgettable College Essay
Crafting An Unforgettable College Essay Whether you're a terse writer or a loquacious one, we can advise you on college essay length. In this guide, we'll cover what the standard college essay length is, how much word limits matter, and what to do if you aren't sure how long a specific essay should be. While rated below GPA, Course Load, and Test scores for most universities, the essay still remains an important factor in admissions. The essay allows the candidate to express something that cannot be determined based on data alone. Make sure you spend plenty of time on this part of the application and that it represents the best you have to offer. Depending on the college, the essay can be quite important. The most important component of any application are the studentâs grade and academic rigor. Assuming the student meets the academic criteria, the essay can set the student apart from others in the potential admit pile. THIS IS YOUR MOMENT TO BRING YOURSELF TO LIFE⦠The essay is a critical piece in the application process! This may be the only opportunity you get to show exactly who you are, what you stand for and where your passions lie. With an array of essay topics to choose from, pick one that makes sense to you. Perhaps you want to talk about the moment you helped your athletic team to win an important game. If you really feel that you will do poorly or that the anxiety might negatively impact the rest of your test, you should be OK without it. My son took the ACT without writing as a junior and received a 34 composite . He retook it as a senior with writing and also received a 34 composite , but only received an 8 on the writing portion. The only other difference between the 2 scores is that he got a 36 Reading/35 Science on the first ACT, and 35 Reading/36 Science on the second. For competitive schools that donât require the writing portion, would you recommend that he submit his first score without the writing, or the second? Given their testing page, I find it hard to believe that they are rejecting students for not having an essay score. We will be leaving it up, however, until we get clearer guidance from the school. The did say that a single test with an essay is fine. Thatâs a difficult question to answer because of all of the potential factors. Have you had a practice essay scored to know where you stand? Also, donât expect an essay score to stand out in the same way that your ERW and M scores might. Some colleges feel that removing ârecommendedâ would mean that they are diminishing the importance of writing as a skill. Thatâs not the same thing as saying that it is important to them in the admission process. He shouldnât count on his Writing score making a difference. I donât know of any superscoring school that will not superscore across ACT and ACT with Writing. As you may have read, the essay is becoming less important every year â" even at Duke. If you feel that you would do well or would like to keep all of your options open, then I would encourage you to spend the extra time to take Writing. So even though there's no word limit, they'd like somewhere in the 4-10 pages range. High school students are not usually writing papers that are longer than 10 pages anyways, so that isn't very limiting. Either way, it will not hurt your ability to superscore. Warn students not to write about high-minded topics or exotic locales simply to impress the reader. If you really can't find any length guidelines anywhere on the admissions website and you're at a loss, I advise calling the admissions office. They may not be able to give you an exact number (in fact, they probably won't), but they will probably at least be able to tell you how long most of the essays they see are. (And keep you from writing a panicked, 20-page dissertation about your relationship with your dog). Maybe you want to shed some light on a mission trip that you took to China. More important, the UCs are likely to drop the essay requirement this year. That said, I donât like to stand in the way of students motivated to retest. If he has the time and the desire, he could take the ACT again on Feb 8.
10 College Application Essay Dos And Donts
10 College Application Essay Dos And Don'ts At heart, I am still reserved , but in finding my voice, I found a strength I could only dream of when I stood in silence so many years ago. Scanning the school club packet, I searched for my place. Being part of the rock climbing community has helped me develop my social skills. I donât have an answer to what exactly it is I want to do for the rest of my life. I love English and political science, but I have yet to find such an all-encompassing response as potatoes. What Iâve realized though, is that I donât have to sacrifice all for one. I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route. I donât feel Iâve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically theyâre the most natural and comfortable paths for me. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant. From each of my interests I learn things that contribute to who I am and shape how I see the world. And when I do have an answer, I will go forth with the knowledge Iâve gathered from each of my varied interests; and I will never stop learning. And when asked what to eat exclusively for the rest of my life, I will enthusiastically respond âpotatoes! Day by day, I began to stand a little taller and talk a little louder both inside and outside of debate. I was sick of how confining my quiet nature had become. For better or for worse, I decided to finally make my voice heard. But then, I sat in on a debate team practice and was instantly hooked. I was captivated by how confidently the debaters spoke and how easily they commanded attention. Clearly, this method wasnât going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. Every time I interact with climbers better than myself, I learn a new technique and create new bonds. I began to voice my opinions as opposed to keeping my ideas to myself. As my debate rank increased from the triple to single-digits, so too did my standing at school. I began interacting with my teachers more and leading my peers in clubs. In discussions, I put forward my ideas with every bit as much conviction as my classmates. When seniors began to ask me for advice and teachers recruited me to teach underclassmen, I discovered not only that I had been heard, but that others wanted to listen. In a few months, my blood no longer froze when I was called on in class. I found I could finally look other people in the eyes when I talked to them without feeling embarrassed. My posture straightened and I stopped fidgeting around strangers.
